Frequently Asked Questions about UK Marriage Visa

What is a UK Marriage Visa?

A UK Marriage Visa, also known as a Spouse Visa, allows the husband or wife of a UK citizen or person with settled status to live and work in the UK.

Who can apply for a UK Marriage Visa?

You can apply if you are married to a UK citizen or someone with indefinite leave to remain or settled status, and both of you are over 18 years old. You must intend to live together permanently in the UK.

What are the financial requirements for a UK Marriage Visa?

The sponsoring partner must have an income of at least £18,600 per year. If there are children involved, the threshold increases. Alternative sources like savings may also be used.

Do I need to speak English to apply?

Yes. You must prove you can speak and understand English by passing an approved English language test at level A1 CEFR or higher, unless exempt.

How long does it take to get a decision?

From outside the UK, the average processing time is 2 to 3 months. From inside the UK, it’s around 8 weeks for standard service, or 1 week for priority service.

Can I work in the UK on a Marriage Visa?

Yes. Once granted, you are allowed to work or be self-employed in the UK without restrictions.

How long is the Marriage Visa valid for?

If you apply from outside the UK, the visa is valid for 33 months. If applying from inside the UK, it’s valid for 30 months. It can be extended later for another 30 months.

Can I include my children in the application?

Yes, but you must meet additional financial requirements. Each child requires an extra £3,800 for the first and £2,400 for each additional child.

What happens if my visa is refused?

You can appeal the decision if you believe the refusal was incorrect, or reapply with corrected documentation. It’s often advisable to seek legal advice in such cases.

Can I travel during the application process?

If you’re applying from inside the UK, you should not travel while your application is pending. Doing so may result in the application being withdrawn automatically.

Can I switch to a Spouse Visa from another visa type?

Yes, as long as you're in the UK on a visa that allows switching (e.g., a fiancé visa or student visa). You must meet all eligibility requirements.
